Marine Studies Year 13Marine Studies at High School!
The programme development was made possible through funding by the National Curriculum Alignment Project. The collaborative marine studies programme development between secondary teachers and polytechnic tutors is a New Zealand first. The marine studies smartpath programme aims to develop knowledge of marine biology, marine invertebrates and taxonomy, marine ecology, marine reserves and issues in resource management and aquaculture. Students will develop snorkelling and/or SCUBA skills enabling an introduction to marine surveying and monitoring. Students will observe marine life in the field and increase their capacity to identify and describe marine ecosystems. Do you know this weed? No!! Do smartpaths. Goals of the Programme • Engage students in practical and applied science How does it work? There are six compulsory courses and an optional course. Each course has a resource kit. Workshops and school visits are conducted by the Marine Studies Smartpath Coordinator to give extra support and technical advice. The programme handbook provides further directions on the moderation and assessment guidelines. Cluster groups have been formed for networking and exchange of ideas for marine science education. Marine studies staff are available to give diving support and technical facilitation of the marine surveying field work.
