Home / Bachelor of Applied Science
Once you have completed the Diploma in Marine Studies you have only one more year to complete the Bachelor of Applied Science.
This is an AUT degree that is offered at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. This degree rounds you out nicely, making you extremely employable in the marketplace. Key skills are picked up in the Terrestrial Ecology, GIS and Natural Resource Management fields.
Papers that are presently delivered in the third year are:
- Environmental Monitoring and Risk Assesment
- Geographical Information Systems (a computer application that stores, views, and analyses geographical information - especially maps). This is used by a large number of prospective employers.
- Terrestrial Ecology 1
- Project 7 (a double paper with 300 hours of research on a topic of your choice)
- Marine Ecology 7
- Natural Resource Management
- Terrestrial Ecology 2
At present successful students obtain the Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Studies major). AUT is putting through a proposal that will allow our students to obtain a marine biology major.
A new paper (tentatively - Biology of Fishes) is also being developed for delivery only at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.
Another advantage of this pathway is that you can stay in Tauranga to complete your degree and be taught by the same staff who have helped you through the Diploma.
Of course at the end of the degree you have the option of continuing your education into a Masters Degree or higher.
You can even potentially complete your thesis in Tauranga with one of our staff as your supervisor.
